Learn how to clean and care for your silk screen prints without damaging the ink or paper. Simple steps for dust removal and long-term preservation.

Quick answer

Clean your screen prints with a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding moisture and direct pressure on the ink. For stubborn dust, use compressed air from a safe distance.

Why screen prints need special care

Unlike posters or digital prints, silk screen prints have raised ink layers that can be fragile. The ink sits on top of the paper rather than soaking in, so scrubbing or using liquids can smudge or peel the design. This is especially true for limited editions like the B3 Fortunes Told Futures Unfold Screen Print, where each artist proof is unique and irreplaceable.

The paper itself is also sensitive. Over time, dust and oils from handling can settle into the fibers, but aggressive cleaning does more harm than good. The goal is gentle maintenance, not deep restoration.

Diagnosis and cleaning steps

  • Symptom: dust or lint on the print surface: Use a soft, wide artist's brush (like a makeup brush or clean paintbrush) held at a low angle. Sweep gently from the center outward. Do not press down or rub. If dust does not lift, stop brushing and try compressed air.
  • Symptom: sticky residue or fingerprint smudges: Do not use water, alcohol, or any liquid. Instead, use a dry, clean microfiber cloth with almost no pressure. Gently dab the area once. If the smudge remains, accept it as part of the print's life. If the smudge spreads or ink lifts, stop immediately. The print cannot be wet-cleaned safely.
  • Symptom: embedded dirt or grime: Hold a can of compressed air 8–12 inches away and use short bursts at an angle. Never shake the can or tilt it upside down. This lifts particles without touching the ink. If dirt remains after compressed air, consult a professional paper conservator. Do not attempt further cleaning yourself.

Product facts

  • B3 Fortunes Told Futures Unfold Screen Print: This two colour screen print was inspired by the ancient art of fortune telling and hand written advertising signs. Only a handful of Artist Proofs remain. Because it's a limited artist proof, careful cleaning preserves both the artwork's condition and its long-term value.
